Four Berry College Computer Science students participated this weekend (November 2-3) in the Nineteenth Annual Southeastern Small College Programming Contest, held in conjunction with the 26th Annual Consortium for Computing Sciences in Colleges (CCSC): Southeastern Conference at Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta, GA.
This was the first time a team from Berry participated in the contest. The students, Brook Bowers, Zane Cochran, Mike Robb, and Daniel Vetter, placed 12th out of 29 teams in the three-hour competition. The team was sponsored and ‘coached’ by Dr. Nadeem Abdul Hamid, Associate Professor of Computer Science at Berry. Out of eight programming challenges, of varying degrees of difficulty, the team completed four problems successfully and submitted incomplete attempts at three others. Overall, it was a fun experience for the students and not a bad debut. They are already looking forward to next year’s contest!

(from left) Brook, Mike, Daniel, and Zane

Also, at the conference, Zane Cochran presented a paper, co-authored with Dr. Nadeem Abdul Hamid, Convex Hull Game: A Tangible Context For Algorithms And Computer Graphics. His talk was well-received and generated several very positive comments. The full paper has been published in the Journal of Computing Sciences in Colleges (28:2, December 2012, 124-131) and a technical report is available on this site. Congratulations to Brook, Zane, Mike, and Daniel for representing Berry well!

This summer, Adam Gillfillan (currently a senior Computer Science major here at Berry College), took part in a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) in Empirical Software Engineering at the University of Alabama. The REU was a 9-week internship. In addition to a stipend, housing, food, and travel expenses were paid for.

Adam’s role as a research intern was to aid Dr. Jeffrey Carver and Dr. Nicholas Kraft in a study of the benefits of design patterns in the software development process. In addition to all the reading, studying, researching, and reporting he did for the particular research study, he also spent much of his time getting a taste of what graduate school is like. Two professional development workshops each week were aimed at preparing participants for the grad school application process as well as professional life afterwards. Adam also attended lab meetings and cohort meetings with nine other REU interns and two graduate assistants who were there throughout his stay at UA.

The culmination of the summer experience was a final project by Adam and three others in his group. For the project, two of the group members were tasked with implementing the “Game of Life” using MPI with no design patterns. The other two members were instructed to use design patterns. The goal of the study was to better understand the effectiveness of design patterns. Their poster presentation can be found here. The experiment was essentially a pilot study for Dr. Carver and his graduate assistant to use as the basis of a formal research paper.

Adam and his group members on presentation day: Chelsea, Kaleb, Adam, and Robert.

Adam’s engagement with his REU group is not over yet. He will be attending ACM SIGSOFT 2012 — the 20th International Symposium on the Foundations of Software Engineering. This year it is being held in Cary, North Carolina, November 13 – 15.

Adam says, “My REU experience in Alabama was amazing. I encourage all undergraduate students to apply for an REU in their respective fields.”

Local internship opportunities

There are at least two local (Rome, GA) companies that would love to have a student work on web-related development projects. Contact nhamid@berry.edu for more details.

Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) are a great way to spend the summer – participating in cool CS research with all expenses paid and a stipend in most cases.

REU in Biomedial Informatics - Extremely Fun and Well Paid Summer Research Internship at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC). (Application deadline: April 6, 2012)

REU in Empirical Software Engineering – at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, AL. (The application deadline is March 15, 2012.)

Interdisciplinary REU: Computer Science and Ecology - at Harvard Forest in rural Massachusetts; an interdisciplinary project, involving computer scientists doing work in sensor networks and data provenance to capture, manage and process the data they collect. This is a great opportunity for students interested in a mixture of ecology field work and computer science research. (Application due Feb 3, 2012)

Other Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) sites can be browsed at http://www.nsf.gov/crssprgm/reu/reu_search.cfm (click on “Computer and Information Science and Engineering“)
